alchemicink: Fancy pen on paper (Fancy pen)

Since Zeztz and Ultraman Omega are still on break this week (well Zeztz is back tonight, but I won't review it until next Saturday), I decided to post the reviews for the last two episodes of my season 1 rewatch of Miss Scarlet and the Duke. (Just in time, since season 6 starts on Jan 11)

I chose the title quote because it was funny to me. But what's funnier now is that I can't remember if it was Eliza or William who said it. Could equally be either 😂 That's just the nature of their relationship.

Anyway, mild spoilers below (but nothing major)

Miss Scarlet and the Duke (season 1, episode 5)

Who doesn't love a good forced proximity trope? (Ok, some people out there don't, but I am not one of them)

This was a good episode to showcase Eliza and William's relationship. When Eliza goes missing, William drops his responsibilities to look for her. That part of the episode gives us great insight into how much he truly cares for her. And it gives him an opportunity to show his own detective skills (since the prior episodes were about establishing Eliza's skill.)

The trail eventually leads William to an abandoned prison where he finds Eliza accidentally locked in. The relief at seeing each other again quickly devolves into an argument. But I feel like these arguments demonstrate the nature of their longtime friendship. They've known each other so long that they can easily push each other's buttons. I enjoyed watching it.

The plot of this episode sets the stage for the finale. They uncover a forgery operation and learn that Eliza's father had been murdered. It's a good mystery.

Miss Scarlet and the Duke (season 1, episode 6)

Season one wraps up by concluding the forgery case from the previous episode, and catching Henry Scarlet's killer.

I remembered how things played out (the identity of the culprit), so I tried watching this season to see if there was any foreshadowing for the reveal. But there wasn't any that I saw, so I'm curious if this was a last-minute writing choice. The reveal does feel like it comes out of left-field even when I knew it was coming. Oh well.

Overall, it was good to see Eliza get some closure for her father's death. If this were a one-season show, it would have been a good ending point.

I enjoyed season one just as much as I did the first time.
