Slightly late answering

thefridayfive questions this week 😅 But I am posting before midnight here, so it's still Friday 🤭

1. What was the last book you read (or are currently reading)?

Not technically a book (because it's a manga series) but I'm on volume 8 of Fruits Basket right now. I'm doing my annual reread. This volume started off with a focus on Hatsuharu, who is one of my favorite characters 🥰

2. What was the last movie you watched?

I haven't been watching any movies lately, so it's the Ultraman Arc movie, which I last rewatched sometime in January I think

3. What television series are you currently watching?

I'm watching several!

(Both of these are beginning to be available on YouTube for a limited amount of time)

4. What are some of your favorite blogs or communities online?

Don't really follow any blogs or communities outside of Dreamwidth. There are a lot of fun communities here that I enjoy. I couldn't name them all, lest I forget one!

5. What social media do you belong to and check often?

long-suffering sigh I'm still on Twitter because it's the best place for me to keep up with Japanese entertainment news. Mostly I'm there retweeting fan art these days.

I'm enjoying my recently-created Tumblr account! Though I've been too busy this week to pay much attention to it.

I would love to delete my Facebook account but it's unfortunately useful for work sometimes 😩

1. Have you ever watched illusion magic? Close-up, or in a stage show, or on television? Did it work for you?

I can't recall ever seeing a magic show in person, but I've watched some on TV over the years. I think they're neat!

2. Have you ever wished on a star, or a lucky cat, or a coin in a wishing well? Did it work in some way?

I like making silly little wishes on silly little things like those. I never pay attention to whether they come true tho 😅 When I was a kid, my friends and I would always make a wish at 11:11 (am or pm) and I still do that now if I happen to catch the clock at just the right time.

3. Have you ever cast a spell, made a love charm, or tried a curse? Did it work in some way?

I don't think shaking my fist and saying "curse you" to various printers over the years counts. (I mean, it certainly doesn't work 😂)

4. Are there any other traditional superstitions you pay attention to? Do they work in some way?

I do get superstitious about sports. Like, for example, if my team won then I want to wear the same shirt for the next game too. You know... just in case!! But I'm not as bad about it now as I used to be. I am constantly reminding myself that I have no bearing on the outcome of the game 😅 and that helps.

5. Would you want major magical powers like in a fantasy story? Which powers, and how would you use them?

Yeah, that could be fun! I think I'd be happy with just some generic powers that would require me to wave my arms around a lot and there would be sparkly colorful ribbons in the air too 😁✨️

1. Do you know of any other words for snow? What's your favourite and why?

I suppose "flurry" and "blizzard" count, yes? I don't like actual blizzards, but I do love the word itself. I'm weirdly fond of words with double z's in them 😅

The Japanese word for snow is 雪 (yuki) which is also a word I like. (It's easy to remember)

2. What's your ideal temperature range for winter?

50-60F 😂 I don't tolerate cold very well so anything under 50 is unpleasant for me.

3. Favourite winter activity? What about it makes it your favourite?

I used to enjoy spending Saturdays in January/February walking through the woods. (Technically, I was hunting, but in reality, it was 99 percent just walking through the woods.) Anyway, if you go through the woods in winter, you can see better because there are fewer leaves, and you don't have to worry about snakes! It's very pretty.

Our hunting group doesn't get together anymore, so I haven't done this in years. But I do miss hanging out in the woods.

4. What are three things you can't do without when winter arrives?

My winter coat. Soup. Christmas decorations. (they make the cold months bearable 😁)

5. Do you have favourite winter holiday activities?

I enjoy putting up the aforementioned Christmas decorations! Holiday baking is nice too but I don't do it often.

1. What made you happy this week?

My birthday was on Wednesday, and I have celebrated all week with lots of good food 😁

2. What made you sad?

Getting older means that it's a bad idea to eat cookie cake for breakfast.

3. What made you angry?

NC State's men's basketball team played like trash on Tuesday 👎

4. What are you looking forward to in the next week?

Hopefully I will finally have the time to continue watching Gingaman!! And also a few more episodes of Ultra Q!

5. What are you not looking forward to?

I have a county commissioners' meeting to go to Monday night that looks to be super long and boring. And Tuesday is primary election day in North Carolina, so I'm stringing for AP that evening. It'll probably be a long night. (But, on the bright side, after Monday and Tuesday, the rest of the week should hopefully be smooth sailing.)

When did you last . . .

1. Scrounge for change (couch, ashtray, etc.) to make a purchase?

If scrounging through my purse for exact change while waiting in the drive-thru line counts, then... yesterday

2. Visit a dentist?

Just last week actually!

3. Make a needed change to your life?

Hm... I suppose when I had to buy a new car in 2024. The transmission was going out on the old one 😒

4. Decide on a complete menu well in advance of the evening meal?

I decided on tonight's supper yesterday evening. I usually have to plan out meals in advance because otherwise I cannot find the motivation to cook. (And there's nowhere nearby to go buy food if I don't)

5. Spend part of the day (other than daily hygiene) totally/mostly naked?

I never do this 😂

1. What did you want to be when you were a kid?

I spent so many years thinking I wanted to be a teacher because that was an easy thing to imagine doing when I was a kid. Thankfully, by the time I was applying to colleges, I'd realized that I would have actually hated teaching!

Unfortunately, by the time I was applying for colleges, I'd switched my career goal to "reclusive novelist" 😂

2. What is your proudest accomplishment so far?

Hmm... this probably sounds silly, but I'm just proud of being able to cook for myself.

3. What is your dream job?

...honestly, it's still reclusive novelist

4. Where do you see yourself in 10 years?

Hopefully still where I am today. I don't wanna move and I'd like to continue to keep my job. But who knows what life will throw at you along the way ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

5. What does it take to make you happy?

Honestly, all it takes usually is a good meal and some quiet time each day to make me happy 😊
