Episodes 6 through 10 of Blazar were DELIGHTFUL. This show continues to grab my attention and not let go. I get a good laugh out of every episode, the kaiju fights continue to be entertaining, and sometimes the messages are quite thoughtful.
Spoilery thoughts under the cut!
Episode 6
Hilariously weird!
The first episode with a focus on Yasunobu. It's funny to learn that he's just a weird guy who talks to washing machines and is also incredibly ripped?! 😂 And he's overworked, which is relatable lol
I liked the premise for this episode which was simply that the Alien Cannan folks wanted to make all the tech on Earth revolt. It was a nice little change of pace, and I liked that it was an opportunity to showcase interactions between Gento and Yasunobu. (If there's any complaint I have with the series so far, it's that I just want to see Gento interact with the team more, like he does in episode 2.)
Also, the bag of tomatoes in this episode had me cackling. Visually, very funny to see them driving to a serious battle and Gento's in the passenger seat still clutching the bag he forgot to give Yasunobu. Even funnier when they go flying later. Now he'll never get those tomatoes!!
Episode 7 & 8
A nice two-parter, though I didn't find it as thrilling as the other episodes so far. But as a farmer's daughter, I resonated with the drought/deluge part of the storyline. I know how frustrating it is that you can't control the weather.
I cared less about the Professor's motivations for summoning the kaiju though. Blah, blah, blah, humanity is terrible. We know!
Maybe it didn't work for me because the story tried to build up the interactions between the Professor and Gento, but then resolved it with the interactions between the Professor and Teruaki. Idk, the split just didn't resonate with me.
But I didn't dislike the episode! The storms were very ominous, and I enjoyed the visuals of the kaiju battle happening in the background while the verbal battle was happening too.
Episode 9
I loved this one!! I'm not sure I entirely understood half of what was happening but I definitely enjoyed it 😂
I learned from the YouTube comments that this was an homage/callback to Ultra Q (including a cover of the theme song?!). While I didn't know the references myself, the story was still intriguing enough to keep me on the edge of my seat, even though, ultimately it was very simple.
Anri's my favorite, so I liked that she had a chance to shine here again. And I love music too, so I understood how the alien quartet was feeling.
The concert was so ominous 🥰 I'm gonna watch it again soon lol
At the end I was like, "wait, that's it?!" (Why were the aliens sent to pillage? Why couldn't they stop it if they changed their minds? Uh... what're they gonna do now?) But looking back, I think an explanation would be less satisfying.
Episode 10
Another really strong episode. The focus is back on Gento, and this time we get to see him with his family.
I was surprised to learn that they don't know he works for SKaRD. He's told them he's in some other (presumably less dangerous?) division. I'm interested to see if that lie comes back to haunt him later (or if it'll just be glossed over) because he's already hiding Blazar from everyone too. Secret identities are a story beat I just really love, so I hope it gets explored. (But I'll understand if not.)
The kaiju protecting its baby was another fairly simple story, but very effective as a comparison/contrast with Gento's family. And I loved how the conflict between killing/protecting the baby kaiju became a conflict between Gento and Blazar. (Tho I still don't know which one was supporting which plan of action 😅) I appreciated the solution at the end.
After watching this episode, I'm so excited to see more!
Miscellaneous things:
☆ Emi hasn't done anything since episode 4! Please let her do something! (And maybe give Teruaki a focus episode too)
☆ I can't make fun of Yasunobu for naming his favorite washing machine. I used to name all the electronics at my old job. The fax machine's name was *shakes fist at the sky* BARROWMAN!
☆ I need to listen to that Ultra Q cover on repeat. It was so good! I think every TV show would be improved by including one episode where a music quartet plays something in a minor key during an important moment 😂
☆ You know, if I lived in a world where kaiju were rampaging all the time, I don't think I'd go see a kaiju egg hatch in person! Who didn't expect the parent to come running immediately?? But I also fully acknowledge that people would absolutely do this in real life 🙄😅
