Thoughts on Ultraman Blazar episodes 1-5

Because I was so excited about the first episode of the new Ultraman Arc series, I decided to ALSO start watching Ultraman Blazar to fill the void while I wait for new Arc episodes 😅
And I wanted to write up a few thoughts about Blazar as I go because I say I'm gonna do that with every show I watch, but this time I'm gonna actually do it!! I've watched through the first five episodes so far. (I'm watching the English dub version right now but will probably circle back to the Japanese version eventually too.)
Spoilery thoughts under the cut!
It took me until about episode three to really get into the series, but now I'm hooked!
After watching Arc, the first episode of Blazar was a little jarring because they're just so different in the way the stories are set up. Actually, I would consider Blazar's first episode more like a prologue because it doesn't really introduce anyone other than Captain Gento, the main character. It's episode 2 before we finally get an introduction to the SKaRD team, and get a better sense of the world itself.
And now that I'm getting to see the team interact, I'm loving that! They're a fun group and I like that they easily get along well. Gento makes it clear early on that they're not gonna be stuck with the usual protocols. They call each other by their first names and they can speak their minds without worrying about getting scolded.
It's the little moments that really stand out.
Gento poking Emi in the back with a pen after Anri poked him signing paperwork was funny. The three-way handshake between Emi, Anri, and Yasunobu was cute. The training montage as they learn to operate Earth Garon was entertaining.
That relaxed atmosphere between the team is fun to watch. They're busy figuring out their new tech and stopping kaiju. No time for interpersonal conflicts and such!
The Ultraman fights have been fun to watch too. There's an episode where Blazar is fighting Gedos, the sea kaiju, and he creates a fishing rod out of his energy beam weapon. Visually just really cool to watch!
I loved the kaiju design in episode 5. He was just a sleepy mountain dude! It was nice that they didn't have to kill that one but just put him back to sleep.
Things I'm curious about for future episodes:
☆ when will anything about Blazar be explained?? The wristband just shows up and Gento transforms, but like, why?? How was he picked?? I'm excited to get into the lore eventually (I assume?)
☆ how long before the rest of the team figures out that Gento is Blazar? Surely they'll notice his disappearances eventually, yeah? 😂 I do enjoy secret identity storylines tho, so I'm excited to see how long they CAN drag it out before it's revealed.
Some other miscellaneous things:
☆ the opening credits visually move WAY TOO FAST 😂 (in hindsight, I also had trouble with the visuals for Timeranger's opening too. Need these series to calm down a bit lol)
☆ But I really love the song for the end credits! I've been listening to it on loop this week
☆ I only started with the dub by accident honestly (it was the default when I started watching lol), but I'm sticking with it because Johnny Yong Bosch is voicing Gento, and I'm always happy to listen to him in any project. Also, it was fun to hear Chris Sabat pop up as a guest voice in episode 4. I'm curious to see which other voices I recognize as we go.
☆ and speaking of the dub, it was very funny in episode 5 when Anri meets her old friend and slips back into her hometown dialect because in the dub, they translate that to a kinda Canadian accent 😂 so fun! I'll have to watch the Japanese version later to see how she sounds there too. Tho unless it's Kansai-ben, I probably won't recognize the dialect.
☆ I think Anri is my favorite character so far. But we'll see if that changes as we go!
If anyone is interested in watching Blazar too, you can check out the playlist on YouTube here. Just select whichever audio you want.
And if you wanna watch Arc as well, the English dub playlist is here and the Japanese version is here. (I'll write something separately about Arc after I watch episode 2)
