In an effort to start using my DW more, I've decided to start putting together a "weekly summary" of sorts, just to highlight things I enjoyed throughout the week. (The idea was inspired by posts I've been reading from my friend [personal profile] bluedreaming)

My plan going forward is to post these on Sundays, and they'll be a little more coherent (probably) than this one!

Here we go~!

I've been going through some old CDs lately to listen to while driving. Most recently, it was the Broadway soundtrack for Wicked. Many of the songs are quite fun to belt out in the car (where no one else can hear how tone deaf I am lol). I've actually seen this show before back when I was in college (a friend bought tickets for a local performance), but to be honest, I barely remember any of it now outside of the songs. I think I enjoyed it though!

After a few days, I had to unfortunately switch to another CD, however, because it started becoming difficult to concentrate while having "popular~ you're gonna be pop~u~lar~" constantly stuck in my head!

I didn't get a lot of chance to read this week, but I did marathon one day through this tdbk fic where Todoroki gets hit by an insomnia-based quirk. I enjoy a good hurt/comfort fic, and the "hurt" being not a physical injury but a mental one felt like a refreshing change from the more typical ways you can create a hurt/comfort story. (Ironically, however, I did have a bad bout of insomnia the night after reading this, so... proceed with caution??)

I had a chance to watch a few episodes of various things, including the season three premiere of Miss Scarlet and the Duke. My mom and I have been watching this series on PBS since the beginning. It's not award-winning television, but I enjoy the mysteries in each episode, and especially the costuming. (The show is set in late 1800s London.) I really enjoyed the first episode of this season. It opens with Eliza and most of her associates posing for mugshots, which I think was a very fun way to open the episode. They're always getting into trouble somehow.

Anyway, if y'all see me eventually writing fic for this series, just... Look Away šŸ˜…

I also have been leisurely watching Magic Knight Rayearth on the official TMS Anime YouTube channel. (I'm not sure if this is region-locked, but it's available in the United States for sure). It's an old CLAMP series so the character designs are lovely. But I'm not sold on the plot yet after the eight episodes I've watched so far. But I'll give it some more time before I drop it completely (or it gets removed from YouTube lol).

Here is some really pretty Ashido Mina fan art! I'm always happy to find more art of one of my favorite characters!

I listen to pretty much all my favorite Japanese bands on YouTube these days, and I usually let the algorithm rec new releases (because I never remember to check myself). The problem is that YouTube is kinda slow about it, so I only just now saw this new Unlucky Morpheus song. It's a little more low-key than other songs I've heard from this group, but Fuki (the lead singer) generally drowns out everything else anyway, so I guess it doesn't matter. The music video looked really cool though, but it was also genuinely hard for me to watch at times. I get motion-sick really easily, even from insane sweeping camera pans!

YouTube also rec'd (in a more timely manner) this j-metal band I'd never heard of before. I really enjoyed the juxtaposition of cutesy and screamo vocals and have listened to it quite a bit over the last few days. Just so y'all know, 15-year-old Holly would have been obsessed with this band and would have made this her whole personality for months šŸ˜‚

In other news, I've been doing a lot of fic writing! I'm trying to get some treats done for this round of Planet BNHA (it's scifi themed!). I've been waffling a bit between "I love this" and "I should delete this!" But that's pretty normal for me, and it's more the former than the latter, which is good. My biggest problem, as always, is my inability to focus, so progress is generally slow-going. But I'm having fun which is the most important thing!

In real life events, I randomly saw the same (probably) bald eagle twice on my commute to work. (He was enjoying some roadkill...) I really only catch a glimpse of these birds once every few years, so it was cool to spot this one twice in one week. Bald eagles are really quite striking in their appearance compared to other local birds.

Lastly, I decided to get back to my annual reread of Fruits Basket. I fell off the wagon last year, but I hope to keep going this year. I'm making a Twitter thread of my favorite panels and parts as we go if anyone's interested in following along. (Bonus, it's the old Tokyopop version I'm reading, that I painstakingly collected back when I was in high school)

That's it for this week in January!

Singing in the car is the best! Mostly I just remember listening to my sibling singing along; such fun times ā™”

Insomnia is an odd one; my second favourite Stephen King is actually the book ā€œInsomniaā€ where it kind of becomes a super power. Pretty neat but also kind of unsettling.

The problem is that YouTube is kinda slow about it

This is definitely my problem too!

I just took a small peek but what a cool band!

Good luck with the treats!

An annual reread tradition is really neat; I think I sadly only have vol 12 (the yen press one). Have you tried the sequel series? I got the first volume but then wasn’t sure.

Have a great week!

It’s a little on the scary side but if you don’t mind that then I definitely recommend it!

Yeah YouTube is so weird sometimes. I get the sense that they don’t know how all their algorithms work either.

Yeah I think I’m pretty 100% with the original too; anything either would seem bland in comparison or would have to be much more extreme. Unless they went the route of actually being well adjusted, but from the first book they weren’t so…

My reply is extra late so it’s all good! The beauty of dw ā™”
