Saturday's usual TV rambles
Aug. 23rd, 2025 09:05 amThis week: self-aware recaps, reconciliations, relationship studies, and a ghost story! Plus, I think the main trio of SSBC should consider polyamory 😂
Gozyuger (episode 26)
There's not too much to say about this episode because it was the obligatory recap, but the framing of it was really funny. Hoeru gets a new job at Toei (the show's real life production company 😂) and helps them film a documentary about the Gozyugers. Of course, because Hoeru's luck is as terrible as ever, the producer doesn't even know he's GozyuWolf and he gets fired at the end.
All in all, a very fun episode! Lots of silly moments with all the characters (Kumade getting interrupted during his exposition was great). And I especially liked the pixel bit with Fire Candle and Bouquet 😂
It was a nice break but I hope we're back to moving the plot forward in the next episode
SSBC (episode 7)
I was just thinking this week about how this is back to school season where I live, and then this show gives me an episode where a teacher gets murdered! Oh no!
Once again, figuring things out with the case was pretty easy for me, but once again, I really enjoyed the episode anyway. I can't figure out why this show is so fun to watch, but it is! Maybe it's the cast? I do like all of them, even those who only appear briefly.
Anyway, my biggest thought on this episode was that the three main characters (Nanami, Igaki, and Aoyagi) would be great as a weird polycule 😂 Igaki and Aoyagi being divorced already is honestly such a fun dynamic to watch, and throwing Nanami into the mix is fun too. I really liked the scene where they're asking Misato (their daughter) questions about the teacher, and Nanami is just also there having to cheerfully keep them on-topic the whole time because Igaki and Aoyagi keep arguing. Weird as hell dynamics that I absolutely love.
Anyway, overall, I really liked this episode. I liked the investigation mixed with personal drama too. I'll be sad when this series ends.
Whale Store (episode 9)
The penultimate episode! Things are starting to wrap up. It takes a little bit of time (and a drunken text apology) but Wan and Maewnam work things out to get back together. I enjoyed the little flashbacks throughout this episode showing some very cute moments with them we haven't seen before. I'm not 100 percent sold that the two of them really resolved Wan's "I don't want help" issue but at this point, it's good enough. I'll take it.
Maewnam's friends finally resolved their issues too, and this has been the first time I've actually enjoyed their storyline. I kinda wished it had all happened a few episodes ago, and then maybe they could have been more involved in the main plot instead. But at this point, it's good enough. I'll take it.
Final thought on this episode: I'm not sure I'd leave F1 in charge of the store for a day 😅 he is not really a responsible teenager!
10 Things... (episode 8)
This is an unpopular opinion, but I liked this episode! This week, Tojo's off on a business trip, so the focus is on Keishi and the rest of the office crew. Specifically, Utagawa and her boyfriend/work troubles.
Normally, I might be annoyed by too much focus on a side character with no other bearing on the plot, but I liked that her problems made me think more about Keishi and Tojo's relationship. How they're not quite on the same page yet. How it's not always easy to communicate what you want. Listening to Keishi and Utagawa talk made me feel like I had some more insight into Keishi's mindset. (When most of the show has focused on Tojo's point of view so far.)
As a sidenote, I also enjoyed trying to figure out what this show is trying to say about society expectations while growing older. Utagawa thinks she wants to be married by 30. She says at 29 she's too old for a tantrum but too young to be mature about disappointment. It really felt to me like she was reacting to what's "expected" from her as a person her age. And it made me think about previous episodes where Tojo is very self-conscious about what's expected from him at his age (like he isn't supposed to enjoy cute stuff at age 39). I'm not sure this message is fully developed, but it was enough in this episode to get me thinking more about it.
So I liked this episode even if we didn't get any progress with the main romance. The preview looks like trouble is brewing on the horizon though, so I'm very curious to see what'll happen next week!
Final thought on this episode: now that she's single again, I think Utagawa should get a girlfriend ðŸ¤
Ultraman Omega (episode 8)
I actually really enjoyed this one! I do love a good ghost story. This one wasn't very fleshed out and it sorta ended without a satisfying wrap up, but it did make me laugh a lot. Sorato really is down for anything. So I had a great time watching it!
Ayumu brings the boys to investigate a mysterious foggy mountain with some weird ghost hunters. There's an abandoned town (complete with an old rickety ferris wheel 😂) and a boy who keeps trying to warn people away. No one seems to understand his very clear "turn back" gestures tho. Poor guy.
The kaiju fight was fun with Omega struggling to keep himself, the kaiju, and trigaron from falling through the portals. It kinda went on a touch too long for me, but I appreciate the attempt to make this fight different from previous ones.
Next week is a recap special, so I won't be reviewing that. But maybe in episode 9, Ayumu will get to do something plot relevant 🤞
