Sunshine 2023 #1: headcanon ramblings about Kurama

First time participating in sunshine_challenge! Thanks to bluedreaming for giving me a heads-up about it. I hope to be able to keep up all month. Here's the first prompt:

Iris: They can represent faith, hope, courage, wisdom and admiration. Specific flower colors attach further meanings to the pretty blooms. Purple iris brings a message of wisdom and compliments, while a bouquet of blue iris blossoms speak of hope and faith.
Bonus Prompt: Pink Rose

I thought I might combine these prompts a little because plants - and roses specifically - always immediately remind me of Kurama from Yu Yu Hakusho. And though he fights with red roses, his school uniform in the early episodes is a pinkish color.

So... pink roses, right? 😁 Plus, the iris prompt mentions purple irises bringing wisdom and compliments, and I think that would be in character describing Kurama too. He's certainly the wisest among Team Urameshi (being technically the oldest, of course, lol) and I imagine that polite compliments are his strong suit, especially when playing up his human teenager persona.

Anyway, all this got me thinking about headcanons for Kurama when he's at school. Understandably, the series doesn't have time to delve into what he's doing offscreen so I think we only get one quick glimpse of Kurama at school (right before the Chapter Black arc gets underway).

But I'm so curious about what Kurama is doing at his school, particularly in the first arcs of the series while Yusuke and Kuwabara are off skipping classes and punching people like the delinquents they are 😂

So, here are a few Kurama as a student headcanons:
☆ he's often bored in class and probably doodles a bit in the margins of his notes
☆ classmates keep nominating him to be class representative (bc he seems very responsible), but he keeps turning it down
☆ he finds secluded places -- usually outside -- to eat his lunch in peace (lunch provided by his mom; he can't bring himself to refuse it when she puts so much love and care into it)
☆ he doesn't join school clubs but if he did, it'd probably be the art club I think. Something that's not really a group activity even if it's a group of people doing it together. And he'd only do nature scenes!
☆ he's a very well-behaved student, but every now and then, a classmate will have something shiny that catches his eye and he'll feel a bit more like his former self -- Youko the legendary thief -- and he'll quietly clench his fists in his pockets to keep from absconding with things that don't belong to him. Old habits are hard to break, after all.

Maybe I'll eventually write a character study fic sometime expanding on these ideas. If you have any thoughts on high school student Kurama, feel free to share!

Yu Yu Hakusho is a series I have had recommended to me many, many times and I have no excuse for still not having indulged. When did you first enjoy the series?

I hope you get the chance to check the series out eventually! It's been probably almost 20 years (!) since I first watched it, but I keep returning to it because I really love the characters

These are all some very plausible headcanons for Kurama, and I would gladly read any fic you might write expanding on these! I could especially see him always making sure to eat the lunches made by his mom, aww.

Thanks! Hopefully I'll get a chance to weave this all together as an actual fic eventually 😊 I was rewatching the early episodes recently, and was reminded that he's really devoted to his mom. So yes, I think he's definitely going to enjoy those lunches 😊
