Garden update: the ripening
Jun. 18th, 2025 07:18 pmI've been too busy to write an update before now, but everything is growing pretty well at the moment, I think. And I've even started picking some squash, peppers, and eggplant!
I think when I last mentioned the garden, it was about the blossom end rot in the tomatoes. I've since corrected the issue, and also preemptively sprayed the pepper plants too. (They're also susceptible to blossom end rot) The leaves on the tomato and pepper plants got a little burned in the process, but they've rebounded pretty well.
I still have a lot of green tomatoes, but only one has turned red so far. (And I missed it initially because it was stuck at the bottom of the plant) That first tomato was already getting rotten when I spotted it 😠but I think a few more will be ready soon, to make up for that miss.
I've picked a few peppers! They don't grow as big as ones you can buy at the store, but they're still big enough to add to a veggie stir-fry. One plant got knocked sideways during a recent storm, but I think all the roots are intact. So I'm hoping it'll bounce back. (Or maybe it's stuck permanently as the plant version of the Leaning Tower of Pisa)
Eggplants are looking good! Did I mention how pretty the purple blooms are? (I need to snap a photo some time) I've already picked a few and I expect many more soon. (Someone kindly rec'd me some eggplant recipes back during the Snowflake Challenge earlier this year, so I'm excited to try them out soon)
The leaves on all the squash plants look a bit yellowish, but they're also still blooming and I've picked about five or six squash already, so I'm not worried about it yet. These blooms are also really pretty and photo-worthy, but they're only open in the mornings so I don't know if I'll actually get a photo of them. (I'm usually only in the garden in the evenings)
Snaps have started to bloom! And I have even seen a few little ones starting to grow. I'll probably be picking them by the weekend... and then trying to figure out how to cook all of them 😅 I'm sure I'll end up giving some away.
The okra is doing well too at the moment. I was worried for a bit because the snaps were overshadowing them, but with all the rain lately, they're finally getting taller. Still have a ways to go before any of that will be ready to pick tho.
Lastly, my little patch of wildflowers are growing tall. A few have even started blooming 🥰 Hopefully that'll attract more bees, which will be good for the rest of the garden too.

Date: 2025-07-06 03:42 pm (UTC)Blossom end rot is so frustrating. So far it hasn't come back, so I'm glad for that. I agree, it seems to depend on the varieties
