Kuwabara's taste in music
Jan. 2nd, 2024 08:52 pmI started a rewatch of Yu Yu Hakusho last week and stumbled across a hilarious bit of background art that I'd somehow never noticed before!
At the end of episode 21 (English dub title: Yusuke's Sacrifice), you can see various posters on the wall in Kuwabara's bedroom.
And one of those posters is for Oingo Boingo?!

Specifically, this is a redrawn version of the cover of their third album Good for Your Soul. (Full disclosure: I had to Google that because I've never actually listened to the band's music.)
This is so random and yet maybe not so surprising? The name "Good for Your Soul" sounds like the perfect little Easter egg to stick into a series that deals sometimes in spirits and souls...
But also, this might have been meant to be a parody name because you'll notice that it says "Bingo" instead in the next frame 😂

(Apologies for low quality photos of my TV screen)
By the way, I also checked the manga volumes I have and this seems to be an anime-only reference. It's cool that this bit of background art adds a little characterization to Kuwabara that wasn't there in the manga originally. (Later in the series it's mentioned that he's a fan of a rock band called Megallica, which is an homage to real life bands Megadeth and Metallica.)
Or perhaps the background artist was simply a fan? 😅
Anyway, it was just so funny, I had to share. Please feel free to share any Team Urameshi music-related headcanons y'all have, because I will definitely be thinking about this all week!
