What's in the Bowl? I can offer (spooky or spooky-ish) North Carolina folklore tales, character headcanons, and music videos from Japanese bands
Let Me Know: If you're requesting a character headcanon, any characters from my fandoms are welcome. The fandoms I frequently talk about are in my journal tags. (It's mainly an assortment of older anime, various Star Treks, and some tokusatsu) Feel free to share your own headcanons in return, if you'd like! I do love to chat about characters π₯°
If you're requesting a music video, let me know if you have genre preferences and I'll try to accommodate them! (Most of the stuff I listen to is rock, metal, and pop)
Other info: For the folklore, I'll share links for additional information too if I have them, but most of the stories are from books I have read or just ones I've heard over the years from other people. Spooky stories, of course, may contain references to murder, death, and the like.
All music video links will be to YouTube.
You're free to request more than one of these things! I will reply as promptly as I can (barring any unforeseen offline life circumstances). This is my first time doing this, so I'm very excited about it!
Happy spooky season to everyone ππ»π

Date: 2025-10-09 04:58 pm (UTC)Ultraman Arc: this is not based on anything in canon, but I just feel like Chief Ban would be a big baseball fan. When they're all hanging around the office, occasionally he'll talk about his favorite players and batting averages and a bunch of other stuff no one else in the office understands. (But they listen anyway because he gets so excited about it). I also headcanon that the city has a local baseball team called the Hoshimoto Stars... and they're the absolute worst in the league but he loves them anyway!
Ryuki: I feel like Kitaoka is the kind of guy who would sing Never Gonna Give You Up while really drunk at karaoke. I don't know why but that's what comes to mind π also, this one probably isn't plausible because they probably aren't the same size, but I want to believe that whenever Goro has to fill in for Kitaoka for work, he wears Kitaoka's suits instead of getting his own
Kuuga: when Ichijou first mentions Tsubaki to Godai in the series, he describes him as a friend from school who can keep a secret. And my headcanon is that Ichijou and Tsubaki definitely kissed in school, and then Ichijou was like "lets never speak of this again, never tell anyone" π (but I think they would eventually tell Godai!)
Gozyuger: I'm sure I've talked about this somewhere else before but I headcanon that Ryuugi went to medical school before the series began. He hated it though because he didn't have a choice in the matter. So he keeps himself sane by playing piano in his free time and teaching himself how to cook. Relatedly, I think when there's nothing going on at the cafΓ©, Ryuugi tries making new Tegasword-inspired dishes, and he lets Hoeru and Kinjirou eat the failures. (There are a lot of failures because not every food should be hand-shaped, Ryuugi! π)
Thanks for letting me ramble about some of my favorite characters!

Date: 2025-10-09 03:36 am (UTC)The Maco Light
Date: 2025-10-10 12:55 am (UTC)Back in the 1860s, a man by the name of Joe Baldwin was working on a train passing through Maco station. It would have been a pretty normal night, except he had the misfortune of working on the train's caboose which became uncoupled from the rest of the train. The rest of the train continued onwards, unaware, while Mr. Baldwin remained behind. When another train approached, he frantically started waving his lantern for them to stop. But it was too late.
Mr. Baldwin was killed in the crash, unfortunately losing his head in the process somewhere in the surrounding swamp.
For the next century, people reported seeing a mysterious light on the tracks after that. It disappears and reappears at random, and it looks like a lantern light. Perhaps Mr. Baldwin was still searching for his head...
The railroad tracks were taken out of service and removed in the 1980s and reports of the Maco light mostly vanished after that.
(I wanted to share this story because I think it's really fascinating that we have an almost identical ghost story here locally, even though I live hours away from Maco. Mysterious lights appear on a stretch of train tracks between two roads, and the legend is about an ill-fated man also stuck on a decoupled part of a train as another train approaches. But there's no record of a crash actually happening. Plenty of people (including two of my coworkers), however, have indeed seen our local ghost light. And these train tracks are still being used. It's an interesting mystery!)

Date: 2025-10-10 01:37 pm (UTC)Thank you! Thatβs such an interesting one! I feel like ghost lights come up here and again, but I havenβt heard of the train connection before; itβs intriguing!

Date: 2025-10-09 12:45 pm (UTC)The Burning Ghost Ship
Date: 2025-10-10 01:28 am (UTC)In the days before America became independent and people were still regularly sailing across the sea to start a new life elsewhere, a group of well-to-do Germans set forth for the North Carolina town of New Bern. They hid their wealth from the ship's crew and captain, who seemed untrustworthy.
And they were unfortunately right to be wary. Once their treasures of money and jewelry were discovered just as they were approaching the coastline, the captain and his crew decided to murder all the passengers and steal their goods that very night. They set the ship on fire to cover up their bloody crime, and then set out in a longboat to escape to shore.
But the ship did not crumble and sink into the waves like expected. It was completely engulfed in flames, blazing as bright as the sun, and it continued sailing forward at full speed, as if being piloted by the ghosts of the murdered passengers themselves.
The burning ship collided with the longboat, and the murderers never got to escape with their stolen treasure after all.
They say you can still catch a glimpse of this burning ship each year in September on the night of the new moon. A reminder, perhaps, of the consequences of committing terrible crimes.

Date: 2025-10-09 05:54 pm (UTC)I'd love some headcanons please! How about some for ATLA? Any character would be fine but I'm curious if you have any for Mai, Kyoshi, Roku or the cabagge guy.
Thanks for offering this! Happy spooky season!

Date: 2025-10-10 01:47 am (UTC)I don't have any headcanons for Kyoshi or Roku, but here's one for Mai: I think she started playing with knives when she was young, sneaking little kitchen knives occasionally and hiding them in her sleeves to practice with later because she was bored. I think she was interested in learning how to use them to fight after seeing Azula practice firebending and Ty Lee showing off her acrobatics at school. Eventually she got her own set of real knives, and to her, they feel like the most important thing she owns. Not that she'd ever let anyone know how much she cares about them though!
And a silly headcanon for Cabbage Man: I think he knows every possible way to eat a cabbage. If you try to refuse to buy a cabbage because you say you don't know what you'd do with it, he will spend all day recounting every single cabbage recipe he knows! There is no escape π€

Date: 2025-10-10 06:44 am (UTC)And the Cabbage Man's hc is great! I wasn't sure if you'd have one for him, that's cool. I kinda want him to give me cabbage recipes now.
Thanks for the headcanons! Happy season!

Glad you enjoyed the headcanons!

Date: 2025-10-14 02:02 am (UTC)β I think Yuichi tried to teach him how to play piano once, but he wasn't very good at it.
β He knows all the best spots to set up for fortune-telling, but still sometimes gets chased away when people don't like his predictions.
β And during that brief time he stayed with Shinji and Ren at Atori, he was secretly appalled by Shinji's snoring. (He doesn't throw pillows at him like Ren does though)

I don't keep up with this band very much so I don't know how active they are these days, but I really enjoy this older song from them, and the music video has a nice "getting the band back together" vibe (but in a sort of yakuza-esque AU π )

Date: 2025-10-30 04:33 am (UTC)The Devil's Hoofprints
Date: 2025-10-31 01:34 am (UTC)Back in the early 1800s, in the small coastal community of Bath, there was a man named Jesse Elliot. He was a proud horse racer, eager to challenge anyone and everyone to prove he was the best.
One day, a stranger passed through town on a beautiful stallion, and Jesse, of course, decided to challenge the fellow to a race. They set off, and Jesse quickly pulled ahead. But he kept urging his horse to go faster and faster. "Take me in a winner," he told his horse, "or take me to Hell."
They rounded a curve, and the horse just happened to look back towards the stranger behind them. Whatever the horse saw spooked it so badly that it immediately dug in its heels and stopped, leaving four deep hoofprint marks in the ground.
The sudden change in momentum meant that Jesse was thrown into the air. He struck a tree and then died.
There's allegedly a fifth hoofprint nearby too, made by the devil himself - the stranger in disguise - as he took Jesse's body to Hell... just as he'd requested for losing the race.
[Note: there are different versions of this story floating around, but this is the most common one, I think. And, though I've never been there myself, I hear that the hoofprints really are still there in the ground outside of Bath. Just a couple of indentations where nothing seems to grow, even after all these years!]

On a completely different and lighthearted note, I will also share a fun Japanese pop music video rec too π here is More Than Like by BiSH (most of their music videos are [delightfully] weird, but this one is just really adorable and Iove how they filmed it!)
Re: The Devil's Hoofprints
Date: 2025-11-11 07:16 am (UTC)And that music video is so cute! I've never heard of BiSH before but they all seemed to have such distinct personalities and it was neat how they captured that with the different locations/outfits/etc. Thanks so much for sharing :)
