Weekly watching post!
Aug. 2nd, 2025 01:35 pmThis past week: the Gozyugers get a new toy, the SSBC team chases an arsonist, Whale Store made me cry, the 10 before 40 guys go shopping, and Ultraman Omega goes on a solo trip.
Gozyuger (episode 23)
I enjoyed this episode because I enjoy every episode of Gozyuger, but it was mostly focused on introducing a new weapon/power-up. And I don't care about that nearly as much as I do when it's more character-focused.
Anyway I'm glad this little mini-arc with berserk Fire Candle has wrapped up now. His friendship with Bouquet is adorable. I loved their scene together in the end. Bouquet can pack a punch!
As for the Gozyugers, it was an interesting decision for Rikuo not to have to explain his actions to the others (and for Hoeru and Kumade to cover him). I feel like that'll definitely have consequences later, especially because Rei will surely return and demand more from Rikuo. I'm definitely intrigued to see where this is going.
I still wish we'd gotten more of Rikuo's backstory here, but oh well. Maybe eventually.
SSBC (episode 4)
This week's crime was a series of arsons. But mostly just like mailboxes and garbage bins, so it didn't feel very threatening, in my opinion. (I mean, they're supposed to be investigating violent crimes...) And the main problem is that the team doesn't have any surveillance footage to work with because the arsonist used a jamming signal.
So this episode wasn't as engaging to me as the previous one, simply because they couldn't do as much as usual. The main focus was Kizawa and his geoprofiling, and the fact that the team got some publicity. Kizawa is a nice side character, so I'm glad he got a focus episode. But it was just not as exciting.
I still enjoyed watching it though. The humorous bits really hit with me. I love Aoyagi. She's just so expressive and really fun to watch.
A fun tidbit from this episode: there was a brief one-scene guest character which I recognized as the recurring candy store owner guy/uncle from Kamen Rider Gavv 😂 I watch too much Japanese TV lmao
Whale Store (episode 6)
I enjoyed this episode a lot more than last week. After getting together at the end of the previous episode, Wan and Maewnam have a lot of cute moments together this time. To me, the beginning of a relationship is always really interesting to explore. This episode actually just lets them spend some time together. I loved the whole spending the night scene where they play cards, watch TV, and cuddle. It was a nice break from the drama. There's still the looming problem of Wan's store facing competition, but I'm looking forward to seeing how she and Maewnam tackle that problem together.
Another thing I surprisingly liked about this episode is that it acknowledged Wan's grief over losing her father. Those scenes were tough to watch, but so many other shows I've watched in the past just never let the characters truly mourn when they lose someone. It felt like an emotional beat that needed to be addressed, even though it made me cry. (I can't believe I'm saying this for a romcom but it's true!)
Also, I just like the stern uncle (as usual, I have forgotten his name). I hope he appears more before the end of the series.
The sideplot of Maewnam's friends continues to annoy me a lot, so I'm continuing to ignore it!
10 things... (episode 5)
I think the current Japanese men's fashion trend of oversized pants needs to die. Immediately! 😂
In this week's episode, Keishi takes Tojo shopping for new clothes, bringing him to the store where his older sisters work. (They're adorable and I love them. I hope they get to appear a few more times before the end of the series, but I won't hold my breath) The three of them kick Keishi out and then proceed to dress Tojo in a variety of clothes. All of which are terribly ugly, in my opinion 😂 I think no one in the Tanaka family should give fashion advice! (I love you Keishi but I think your casual clothes are ugly too lmao)
Meanwhile, Keishi reflects on how much he likes Tojo and why. It's really lovely to see from his point of view too. We get some very nice flashbacks in this episode. I like the way their relationship is slowly developing.
This series is rapidly becoming a comfort watch for me. It's just really sweet. The conflict isn't between them (so far) but with Tojo's insecurities, and I really like the way that's portrayed.
Ultraman Omega (episode 5)
This week's episode was a bit of a downer, but I kinda liked that. Can't put my finger on why though. (Maybe it's because I didn't vibe with the kaiju puppet this week? 😅)
Sorato goes to make a delivery, so the episode is largely just him and the guest stars, Miko and her aunt. I enjoyed watching him interact with new people in his usual awkward but charming way, and I thought Miko was compelling with everything she was dealing with.
But the emotional resolution of the episode fell flat for me. Suddenly at the end of the episode, she and her aunt are getting along and I'm not quite sure why that changed. Maybe I would have been satisfied if this episode had another five extra minutes or so to flesh things out.
I'm trying not to be so hard on Omega because I do enjoy the episodes as I'm watching them, but afterwards, I end up picking them apart. And I'm not feeling the need to rewatch them like I did for Arc and Blazar. Maybe eventually I'll be able to turn off this critical part of my brain and enjoy it more in the future.
