Posting this earlier than usual because I won't have time tomorrow. (So today's pull quote, from Ultraman Omega, feels apt π)
Anyway, this week: some important Nem lore on Zeztz; Gozyuger remembered that Kinjirou should be in school; Gundam cosplays in Hana Kimi; the Punks Triangle duo goes to a rave; and the Ultraman Omega trio goes on their first kaiju investigation case! (Kosei screams a lot, of course)
Mild spoilers below, as always:
Zeztz (episode 7)
Seven episodes into this series and I have to admit that I do not care for these outlandish CGI dream fights. I have always preferred fight scenes in dirty warehouses and tiny back alleys. Something that gives the people involved a set to interact with as they fight. Zeztz's dreamscape fights just don't have that, so I didn't really feel engaged with the big fight in this episode with the Nightmare.
But other than that, I enjoyed this episode. It concluded the conflict from the previous episode (saving the agency president), gave us some interesting information about Nem (which finally makes her a little more compelling to me), and sets up an overarching storyline for the series as it moves forward (finding where Nem physically is). I think a long-term mission will be good to have alongside Baku's regular shorter missions.
An odd part of this episode was that Minami was with Baku when he went to talk to the agency president. Which means she probably has some questions about what Baku was talking about... but the episode cut away after that scene and never came back to her. So I'm wondering if the show is gonna acknowledge this at all.
Gozyuger (episode 35)
It's been like 30 episodes, but the show finally remembered that Kinjirou was enrolled in school! It only lasted for about two minutes until the plot kicked in and he went elsewhere, but it was nice to see they remembered it π (it was also nice to see Futoshi again but I wish he'd stuck around longer. Maybe he'll be back next week)
Anyway, this was a pretty simple episode (thank goodness). Kinjirou's old friend appears, also de-aged, and challenges him to a ring battle. The challenges were fun to watch. I especially liked that they were both terrible at making chahan π But what I really liked was that the competition made Kinjirou think more about his wish. I'm interested to see what he decides in the next episode.
The other part of the plot was about the Card No One, but I didn't feel invested in that. I assuming the friendship thing with him and the mook will become some sort of foil for Kinjirou and Genji, but since the next episode hasn't aired yet, I can't say for sure.
Regardless, it's nice to see Kinjirou in the spotlight again. It feels like it's been a while.
Hana Kimi (episode 4)
Ashiya's persistence is finally starting to pay off. She's been trying to encourage Sano to jump again, over and over, and he generally just blows her off. But by the end of this episode, he's back on the field again and ready to head to training with the track team.
There are some really nice moments between Ashiya, Sano, and Nakatsu in this episode. Particularly towards the end when they hash things out, and then all end up laughing together on the track. The trio's friendship really starts to solidify here, which is satisfying to see after the first few episodes.
It also helps, perhaps, that Nakatsu was temporarily their third roommate for a bit in this episode. His antics are really so funny to me. He's just trying to figure out his feelings and he's so earnest about it that you can't help but root for him.
As for the rest of the episode, the silly stuff came from the two schools hosting a "mixer" for the boys and girls. Everyone in these two schools are insane in their own way, and it's just very fun to watch. The highlights for me were Oscar and Hibari bonding over kabaddi (by just shouting "kabaddi? Kabaddi!" at each other) and Sekime landing himself a girlfriend by cosplaying as Char from Gundam π (thanks to his friend who was cosplaying as Amuro)
At times, I feel like I'm watching two different shows: the drama of the main trio and the humor of the school antics. The tonal shifts can be a little distracting, but I enjoyed both sides in this particular episode.
Punks Triangle (episode 3)
This show continues to be a lot of fun to watch. I wouldn't have thought I'd enjoy watching two dudes go clubbing every episode, but actually I'm really enjoying it so far.
There are a lot of little moments that build up their relationship in this episode. I loved the early scene where AE is talking about why he started dressing the way he does and why he does modeling. We learn so much about his character just by listening to him talk about fashion. He started dressing punk in high school so people would leave him alone? Fascinating. Coupling that with his comments from previous episodes as Enaga, I'm really excited to see what this show wants to say about the connection between fashion and identity.
When it comes to his developing relationship with Chiaki, I prefer the quiet moments over the horny innuendo ones. (Yes, I thought the fingers in the mouth bit in this episode was funny instead of hot. The context was ridiculous π) But I loved Chiaki grabbing AE's hand, and them running away from the rave together. I loved them dancing together like kids at a middle school/high school dance π And I also kinda loved the devastated look on AE's face when Chiaki says he likes people who don't keep secrets. The conflict is brewing, and Chiaki has no idea.
Ultraman Omega (episode 16)
Our trio's first mission as kaiju investigators!
The episode started off so slow, in my opinion. It was a lot of exposition, with Sayuki basically laying out what they'll do from now on and how things are changing. It did not hold my attention, especially since we got the same gist at the end of the previous episode. (Also, if I were them, I'd be mad that my new boss is suddenly working from my living room/bedroom!)
But I was pulled back in once they found the kaiju. It was really fun to see Sorato act all cool during the chase, while Kosei and Ayu-nee were panicking. Sorato in that scene was really the highlight of the episode for me. And then the actual big kaiju fight was silly. Trigaron is really just a big cat π I laughed out loud a couple times, even if it was a little over-the-top.
I feel like my main complaint about Omega really is just the writing, because I love the characters themselves. (Especially Ayumu! Let her keep doing more!) To me, it mostly just feels like "things happen" and there's nothing else there to dig any deeper for. I like it well enough but I'm gonna forget about this episode by tomorrow, tbh.

Nakatsu is adorable β‘
Fingers in mouth? π Iβd probably be in your camp (my pet peeve is food - there was a recent show where it was like: but what happened to the grape! Where is the grape! Someone is going to choke!!)

It's like they couldn't afford to film there π
Nakatsu is forever my fave character in this series
I just gotta admit that fingers in mouth do nothing for me π the context made it so much sillier than sexy. (Lol, I'd be just as distracted by and worried over the food too π€)
