This week: festivals, bombs, and aquariums, oh my! Plus, a new character is introduced in Whale Store, and it's unseasonably cold in the world of Ultraman Omega (I'm jealous π)
Spoilers for each episode below
No. 1 Sentai Gozyuger (episode 21)
This episode opens with Sumino's sister getting kidnapped again, so that's a thing that happened. Instead of following up on this much (Sumino spends most of the episode offscreen doing her own investigating), the guys go to a festival. As usual, it's fun to watch all the nonsense that everyone gets up to. Ryuugi saving the festival by turning it into a Tegasword celebration was very funny.
But the most interesting part was Rikuo, who's down in the dumps the whole time. I like that we're finally getting more glimpses into his past. And also I've decided that I like his character much more when he's looking devastated π (sorry Rikuo)
倧追跑ο½θ¦θ¦εΊSSBCεΌ·θ‘η―δΏο½ (episode 2)
I may start just calling this SSBC for short instead of copy/pasting the full title every time π
In this week's episode, the team investigates a guy who makes bombs and his girlfriend who's also involved in some way. Things were a bit predictable, but I enjoyed it anyway. I like that Nanami and Igaki (the new guy and his mentor) keep being more competent in solving cases than the actual detectives π I do enjoy the conflict between SSBC investigators and the First Division detectives. But I wonder how many episodes it'll take before they start getting along a little better.
Anyway, Takaki wasn't in this episode much. But such is life for a supporting character. This episode did feature a different member of the team showing off his bicycle identification skills which I thought was really funny π What a niche a skill to have
Whale Store xoxo (episode 4)
I really liked this episode! Or rather, I really liked all the focus on Wan and Maewnam after their kiss in the previous episode. Wan remains a bit uncertain about things, but Maewnam is full on flirting this entire episode and she's adorable! I love her. Best character in the show π₯° Seriously, I find her willingness to pursue a relationship really fun to watch (which, conversely, makes Wan's hesitation more frustrating).
This episode featured them celebrating Songkran (which I had to look up - I really enjoy when I learn new things from shows!) And all of those scenes were really cute π₯°
Conflict is brewing on the horizon tho, with the introduction of a new professor who works with Maewnam. She's rude right from her first appearance so she's definitely going to cause trouble. We'll see how that complicates things moving forwards.
I don't care for the storyline happening with Maewnam's friends, so I'm ignoring it for now π
10 things I want to do before I turn 40 (episode 3)
Another cute episode! Tojo and Keishi go to the aquarium! I personally love aquariums so I was like π€©π€©π€© the whole time (even though they did not spend a whole lot of time actually in the aquarium part)
What I like about this series so far is the slice of life vibes. The first half of the episode is Tojo basically going through a week of hell at work (relatable lmao), and he gets through it by looking forward to the date. Maybe other people would find it boring, but I felt like I learned more about Tojo's character by watching how he reacts to all that stress.
But the best part of the episode was still the date. I like that Keishi keeps trying to encourage Tojo to enjoy himself and not be ashamed of things. (Tojo loves cute stuff but constantly tries to hide it.) There's no age limit on enjoying things, so I appreciated this emphasis!
The funniest part of the episode to me was when Keishi is teasing Tojo for what he's wearing to the date (a plain sweater), but he's saying this while wearing a raggeddy-looking jean vest over top a hoodie?? Amazing π
Also, I should mention that Gagaoolala's subs for this series are fucking terrible, and I only continue to watch them because I speak enough Japanese to understand the messed up parts. But if there's a fansubber out there doing this series and you wanna watch, I'd suggest going with the fansubber. They can't be worse than Gaga
Ultraman Omega (episode 3)
In this episode, Ayumu comes to visit the boys, and they head out in search of kaiju again. It's a fun episode, but the shtick of Sorato not understanding the need to hide his identity and Kosei covering for him in ridiculous ways is already getting old for me. I'd love if they just told Ayumu the truth and she kept the secret too. It's my main qualm with the series so far.
The kaiju stuff was okay. Pegunos causing unseasonably cold weather and being able to fly via the cold was entertaining (I loved that he flipped Omega upside down at one point π) and Rekiness seems interesting. Do you think we'll ever get an explanation on why Kosei and Rekiness formed a connection? (Probably not, yeah?)
I think the pacing of the series is kinda slow so far, but hopefully it'll pick up soon. Regardless, I'm still enjoying it.
