Challenge #11

There are plenty of tropes/themes that came to mind for me immediately at seeing this prompt, like "food as a metaphor for love" or "getting trapped beneath rubble together" (I have been writing about both of those lately... not in the same fics tho lol). But the one I wanna talk about is bed sharing/literal sleeping together.

Perhaps it's because it's frigidly cold here right now, but reading/writing characters cuddling together in cozy warm beds is very appealing to me.

I love established relationship fics where the couple is able to have a quiet moment together in bed. Maybe they're falling asleep together after a long day, seeking rest side-by-side. Or waking up from an unpleasant dream, knowing that their partner is within arm's reach for comfort. Or maybe they wake up with the early morning sunrise and admire the way the rays fall across their partner's peaceful expression.

All of that feels sweetly romantic to me, even in how mundane it is too. But those are the moments I often enjoy exploring in fics.

As a subcategory, I also really love "there was only one bed" too, particularly for a story where the two characters are falling in love (but maybe won't admit it yet).

This kind of situation is great for confronting the awkwardness of getting to know someone. After all, sleeping is one of the times when you're most vulnerable. And you really want to trust the person you have to share a bed with. Maybe that's just the moment these characters need to confront their feelings.

Or continue to ignore them 🤭

Plus, sometimes, "there was only one bed" can be pretty humorous too, depending on the temperament of the characters involved. I do enjoy watching an exasperated character get annoyed about the situation (but is secretly thrilled to be so close to the other person in question).

All in all, I just think it's a fun thing to include in fics! (It's nice in visual mediums - like TV and movies - too)

I will wrap this up with a bit of shameless self-promotion 😁 Here are a few of my fics that have included bed sharing/literal sleeping together (though sometimes actual beds are not involved 😅)

the reassurance of knowing (Power Rangers 2017, Trini/Kim)

Lay your head down beside me (Denji Sentai Megaranger, Kenta/Kouichirou/Miku/Chisato/Shun)

A hammock for two (One Piece [live action], Shanks/Mihawk)

Bedtime (Fruits Basket, Kyou/Tohru)

Etched (Yu-Gi-Oh, Ryou/Malik)

in and out (Avatar the Last Airbender, Sokka/Suki/Zuko)

No rest for the weary (My Hero Academia, Bakugou/Kaminari)

Just Me and Boo (My Hero Academia, Bakugou/Todoroki) (this one only includes the only-one-bed trope near the end of the fic, but I think it's amusing enough to include here in this list)

Yesss, a good sharing a bed fic, that uses it as a trope but also recognizes it's not a compulsory figure, that it can be soft or awkward or dramatic or sensual depending on the characters, that different characters will react very differently to the same situation, that it's a real character study...
It's one of my fave things!

Adorei demais os tropos citados. Aconchegar-se, dormir juntos, dividir uma cama por qualquer motivo, serem íntimos um com o outro é muito maravilhoso u.u

Oh, this is all perfection, yes. Love it.

The "sharing a bed"/"there is only one bed" trope will never cease to be such a fantastic tool in stories, for all the reasons you mentioned. The vulnerability, the awkwardness, the realization of feelings (and either being in denial or being utterly scared of it), just the close proximity of the characters sharing the bed is too good. Even waking up in each other's arms, which is a major bonus and icing on the cake for me. It doesn't always have to lead to something sexual either, it can simply just be the closeness and the sense of security of simply being held, of feeling safe, especially if a character hadn't felt like that in a while or isn't normally good at expressing that need of seeking out comfort in such a way.

It's just a trope that'll never get old, and I'll never get tired of. :)
