End of Year fic overview 2024
Jan. 1st, 2025 09:28 amEvery year, just for fun, I go back and look over all the fic I wrote in the past twelve months like those fic meme things that used to go around. I didnβt follow any specific template, but anyone is welcome to use this one if they want. So here are the results for 2024! (Previous years: 2023, 2022. Years before that are on my old livejournal which I'm not gonna bother to link here)
I posted a total of 71 (!?) complete fics on ao3, with a wordcount totaling 56,194.
I may or may not have written my last double drabble for the year in order to get over 56k words π (I was 6 words short otherwise, which was driving me crazy) Anyway, this is a higher wordcount than last year so I'm happy with that. The real surprise is 71 FICS??? I have never posted so many in one year. What a weird (but nice) accomplishment for me!
(Please don't let me write that many next year)
The Fics
Okay, usually I have a list in this section that links to each fic, but there are just so many this year! It's so tedious and such a long list! So I'm gonna skip it and just link directly to my ao3 works here this time.
I will note that a lot of the fics this year were written for various exchanges and challenges, so I would be remiss if I didn't mention them here:
fandomtrees,
halfamoon,
toku100challenge,
seasonsofdrabbles,
femslashfete,
intoabar, 48 flash exchange,
tokuficathon,
pod_together,
fandomgiftbasket, tdbk fantasy week,
tokuholidayspecials, and
writetomyheart (shiritori)
I appreciate that Dreamwidth is a constant source of interesting fic challenges and events! I really enjoy taking part in all these because it makes me feel more like I'm part of a fandom community than when I'm just randomly posting something. It's nice!
What fandoms did you write for this year?
So many! I started adding a lot of new fandoms in 2023, and I've continued that in 2024 as well.
Fandoms that I'd already written before: Yu-Gi-Oh, Fruits Basket, Star Trek Voyager, My Hero Academia, Avatar the Last Airbender, Fullmetal Alchemist, NCIS Los Angeles, Stargate SG-1, Yu Yu Hakusho, Wednesday, Gundam IBO, Star Trek Strange New Worlds, and Killjoys.
New fandoms that I'd never written before this year: Star Trek TNG, Denji Sentai Megaranger, 23.5, Mirai Sentai Timeranger, One Piece (live action), Power Rangers (2017), Inuyasha, Ouran High School Host Club, Ultraman Blazar, Ultraman Arc, Kamen Rider Ryuki, and Kamen Rider Kuuga.
That's a fun variety of fandoms! Some of the new fandoms are old favorites from before I was posting fic, so it was nice to revisit them again. Some are ones I just watched for the first time this year and got inspired enough to write fic!
What did you write this year that you wouldn't have expected last year?
Uh... all the Ultraman Arc fics?? I didn't expect this series to give me so many IDEAS π
...I also just realized I wrote very homoerotic sparring between ladies twice, so uh, that probably says something about me. (It will happen again)
What was the most challenging thing to write?
I think it was The Cursed Wanderer and the Restless Adventurer. I haven't written tdbk in a long time and really struggled to get back into the groove of their dynamic. Tho once I decided to make it a drabble sequence, things did fall into place a little easier
What was the most fun to write?
I had a lot of fun with little character study drabbles and ficlets this year! It's nice just to get a glimpse into a character's head, even if for only a moment. Some personal favorites include the ones from Halfamoon, such as Soft shade of silver (Izumi from FMAB) and Red Alert (B'Elanna from Star Trek Voyager)
Favorite opening lines?
"Sounds like a little animal is rummaging around the Fire Lord's kitchen," Suki teases as soon as she spots Toph, on her tiptoes, stretching her arm into one of the cabinets.
βThe Midnight Diner for Insomniacs
βYou're supposed toΒ eatΒ the food, not admire it like a museum exhibit.β
-Soup
Thereβs a whole wall dedicated to coffeemakers in this store, and Ishido thinks it's glorious.
-Essential office supplies
Favorite closing lines?
Surprises are overrated anyway.
-Less than ideal is still pretty good
"Do you know how to make something called hot chocolate?"
-A flame in the land of ice and snow
The best revenge, after all, is living well.
-The blade end of a knife
Thing that made you laugh the most?
This bit from Flowers got your tongue:
"I need to confess," Hiei admits.
"To a crime?" Kurama teases.
Hiei pushes Kurama's hand closer towards the table, but the advantage is short-lived as Kurama pushes back harder.
"No, it's... that I have... feelings."
"Well, yes, most people come with those built in," Kurama replies, still teasing. Hiei knows this banter is his strategy to win the arm wrestling match.
Thing that made you cry the most?
This bit from Knuckles:
He's already horrified enough about what lengths the spirit will go to protect him.
He does not acknowledge the tiny spark of gratefulness which sits heavy like a stone in his chest.
Pre-canon Ryou & Yami Bakura are fascinating to me, and I should write them again sometime.
Character you liked writing the most?
Since I wrote so many characters for so many fandoms, it's hard to choose. But Hiei was the main character in two of my bigger fic projects (A flame in the land of ice and snow and Flowers got your tongue) this year, and I loved both of those so much.
As a runner-up, I did really enjoy writing Azula for the first time too (in Metamorphic).
...I like writing the angry/grumpy characters π
Character you need to apologize to?
Apologies to Captain Gento for getting kidnapped in Wrong place, right friends
Favorite story of the year?
How am I supposed to pick one out of 71 fics?! π
Okay, but after looking over them all, the one that stands out the most is Lay your head down beside me. I love writing the Megaranger team so much π₯° I remember thinking the fic was going to be a lot shorter when I started it, but then it ended up over 1k words. And they were really easy words that practically flowed from my hands to the page. (That hardly ever happens!)
Most underappreciated story of the year?
Can I say all of the wlw fics? π They never get nearly as much love as the others! (But they do get some, and I'm so grateful for that π₯° Some of them have actually been more popular than I expected)
But if I had to pick just one though, it'd be People-watching which was a fun little fic of Ortegas and Chapel flirting in a bar, and I'm still kinda disappointed that no one else seems to like the way I write them as much. (It's always fun friends-with-benefits vibes)
Biggest surprise of the year?
Writing more women-centric fic! Well, maybe that's not too big of a surprise because it was kinda one of my goals from last year. But I still wrote way more fics than I expected!
Wordcount Breakdown
0-1k: 56 of 71 (78.8%)
1-5k: 14 of 71 (19.7%)
5-10k: 1 of 71 (1.4%)
10-15k: 0 of 71 (0%)
15-20k: 0 of 71 (0%)
20+k: 0 of 71 (0%)
That's the highest percentage of under 1k fics I've ever done in a year π±
I actually dislike how skewed these stats are (just like last year's), so I really hope I can write some longer stuff too next year! (Even if it's just finishing some old WIPs)
It would be really cool if I could write something over 10k again.
What did you learn from your writing this year?
I can't think of anything specific but I think I've honed my ficlet/drabble-writing skills. The past two years have certainly given me a lot of practice π
Goals for 2025?
Longer fics!! I need to work on improving my concentration skills, so that I can get back to exploring ideas through longer stories. There's nothing wrong with the short stuff, of course, but I've done plenty of that recently. I have stories I want to tell that can't be contained within 500 words or less.
I also want to write wlw with more plot, not just cute fluff. (Tho I will continue to write fluff too π€) I just have noticed that many women-centric fics often don't tell the same kinds of stories that men-centric ones do, and I'd like to fill in those gaps where I can.
This next goal is a little silly, but I'd like to get more of my fandoms to double digits. As in, write 10 or more fics for the same fandom. I like seeing the numbers go up π but also I just think it would be neat if someone was reading one of my fics, clicks to see if I've written more for that fandom, and then being delighted to see that I have!
I'd also like to get back to my PRiS fic project, which I sadly neglected in 2024. I should probably rewatch the whole series again π
Lastly, as always, I would love to finish the kacchako time loop fic I have been working on SINCE 2019!! Please let 2025 be the year I escape the time loop
Special thanks?
As always, a hearty thank you to
bluedreaming for doing pod_together with me again! It's always a really fun time!
Also want to thank
linky for running several Toku things that got me writing more for new fandoms this year! And everyone else running all these other fun challenges and exchanges I've been participating in.
And, of course, everyone who has been kind and encouraging this year, and everyone who has taken a moment to read my writing. I appreciate it so much π₯° I write for me, but I share it to connect with people!
Final thoughts?
Some years I'm dissatisfied with the results, and other years I'm ecstatic. 2024 feels like a good one overall, now that I'm looking back at it. I'm proud of my stories, no matter how long or short they were. I'm hoping I can continue to have fun with fics next year too.
Cheers to the stories we'll tell in 2025!
