Challenge #8

Talk about a current fannish project (that you are creating or enjoying)

Laughing nervously as I sweep my 100+ WIP docs under the rug. How am I supposed to choose?!

Okay, but actually, I have been working on a Power Rangers in Space fic project for a while, and I could probably benefit from some outside opinions...

I mentioned in another Snowflake post that I did a nostalgic rewatch of Power Rangers in Space last year. And part of the fun (for me) of the rewatch was noticing spots that could have given the characters more development/backstory, but didn't of course because it's a kids' show with limited time constraints.

So I said to myself, I could write a "missing scene" fic series to fill in those gaps. Like, for example, the team appears to graduate high school offscreen but it's never really mentioned. So I wanted to write a little fic where Andros attends their graduation ceremony and reflects on that from his outsider point of view. And also, I just wanted to write some fun moments with the team too outside of what we see in the series.

I'm not doing a fic for every episode, but I do estimate that it'll be at least 30 fics (but probably more) when it's done. Ranging from drabble length to a couple thousand words at most.

Currently I've written about eight so far. But I'm waiting to finish the project completely before I post any of them to ao3.

So this brings me to the idea I've been pondering lately: Do I go with my original idea and post them all as a connected series of individual fics? Or do I post it as one big fic with multiple chapters?

I'm indecisive! I don't want to clog up the fic tag on ao3. But I also think a chaptered version would be weird because of the varied lengths that each chapter will have.

I don't have to decide anytime soon, of course. Because it'll be a long time before it's all done. But I'm thinking ahead anyway, and would welcome any thoughts/suggestions on my posting dilemma! 😅

One of the things I love about fic is that we get to fill in all the missing pieces and the glaring gaps in canon whether that's by writing a missing scene or going down a rabbit hole and creating something epic.

Re your dilemma re posting. One thing I've seen people do is have an over-arching title for a series, but make it clear that the series is individual inter-connected fics and have them titled individually under the wider umbrella. That seems to work quite well and it also means that if someone has an itch to read a particular character you can point them at a specific individual fic in the series without them feeling they'd be missing out if they don't have time to read everything. Of course if they want to read everything then yay!!!

Good luck with the project, it sounds like you've got an epic on your hands. :)

I think your intuition is right that it would work better as a series. Maybe you could space out the posting even if you wait until it's all ready? I wouldn't worry about "clogging up the tag" either way since these all are genuine fanworks :) Good luck with your project! The graduation ceremony sounds particularly sweet.

I'm glad I'm not the only one in that situation!
