Crossposting a G-witch fic I wrote for a Halloween prompt event on Twitter. This prompt was "feyfolk" so I wrote a fun little AU fic (which isn't scary at all because Suletta is a cinnamon roll too good for this world, too pure)

Title: meet me in the garden
Pairing: Suletta/Miorine
Tags: Alternate Universe - Fae; first meetings; meet-cute; fluff; pre-relationship
Ao3 link: here
Length: around 1200 words
Summary: A curious fairy meets a gardener tending to her plants. It's perhaps the beginning of something good for them both.

Suletta carefully brushes leaves out of her line of sight as she peers through the branches that she's hiding behind. Through the small opening, she's able to get a look at the garden on the other side and the human that's tending to it.

The gardener is focused on her collection of tomato plants, kneeling down to pluck away weeds growing around the base of each plant. Despite the dirty work, she moves with a sort of graceful elegance that Suletta finds intriguing. But her face is twisted into a frown, and Suletta wonders why she looks so upset while doing something she clearly enjoys.

Ah... perhaps there's a problem with the tomatoes?

Suletta leans a little closer for a better view, but the plants look healthy and well-cared for as usual. And the tomatoes are almost ripe, most of them already starting to shift from green to yellow-orange. It won't be long before they're a beautiful bright red.

Too focused on the tomato inspection, Suletta doesn't realize she's leaned too far before it's too late.

The leaves rustle and the branches creak as she falls forward into the clearing.

"Hah?" the gardener exclaims, scrambling up to her feet and away from Suletta. "What are you doing?"

Suletta knows she's just made a mistake. Mom and the other fairies have always been adamant that she's not supposed to be seen by humans. At least, not while she's this young. Maybe it's okay when she's older.

But it's too late to just go hide in the underbrush again, so Suletta brushes a few leaves out of her hair and smiles. She's secretly wanted to say hi to the gardener for a while anyway.

"Hi, I'm Suletta."

The gardener's eyes are narrowed and suspicious, and well, Suletta supposes it's not every day that a fairy barges into their secret garden unexpectedly unannounced. Not that the gardener would know she's a fairy just by sight -- Suletta doesn't even have her wings out.

"S-sorry for interrupting," she continues, hoping to ease any worries. "I was just curious about your garden. You work really hard to make it grow well and I admire that."

"You've been watching me."

"...sometimes," Suletta admits.

The gardener frowns, pretending to be more focused on brushing dirt off her hands for a few moments.

"Did my father send you out here to keep an eye on me?"

Suletta shakes her head immediately and emphatically, just so there's no misunderstanding. She doesn't even know any other humans, and especially not the gardener's father. She'd just been curious.

A silence settles over them for a few long moments, with neither of them quite sure how to muddle through the awkwardness of this strange encounter to say anything else yet. They stare at each other, and it occurs to Suletta that the gardener is actually quite pretty up close. Her silvery hair frames her face perfectly, and Suletta would love to reach out and brush the strands of hair out of her face, to get a better look at those deep and thoughtful eyes.

Suletta starts to blush and she hopes her face doesn't match the tomatoes.

"Do you go to school?" she blurts out, hoping any change of subject might be easier.

"Hah?" the gardener repeats. "Of course I do." She narrows her eyes. "We're probably about the same age. Don't you go to school too?"

Suletta waves her hands as she shakes her head again. "Oh no, I don't. But I'd really love to. It seems like it would be a lot of fun. I even have a whole list of things I'd want to do if I could go."

She cuts off her rambles as she notices the strange look from the gardener who has taken a few steps back, looking a mix of confused and suspicious. Suletta watches the way her lips twist downwards as she thinks over her words, until finally things click into place.

"You're a fairy, aren't you?" she accuses. "A witch of the forest. They say you're all dangerous tricksters."

She steps in front of her tomato plants as if they're in the most danger from the magical forest inhabitant. But Suletta would never think to harm a precious plant. Or a human, for that matter.

Suletta frantically waves her hands again as if trying to physically wave away the suspicion too. "N-n-no! Not me! I t-think playing tricks on humans is mean!"

The gardener doesn't exactly seem convinced, but her shoulders relax slightly. "You're an odd one, aren't you?"

Suletta sheepishly scratches the back of her head.

"So why do you want to go to school?" the gardener asks, circling back to the earlier topic. "It's a lot of taking notes and doing homework and taking tests. It sucks."

Suletta isn't quite sure what all those things entail, but she knows that school is supposed to be a place for learning, and she wants to learn as much as she can about the humans who live outside her forest. And now that she's met this girl, she especially wants to learn more about her too.

So she tries to explain that the best she can, in stumbling halting words that ramble off into a few excited tangents, but once she's done, the gardener's expression has morphed into something thoughtful. Not anything like the guarded look she wore earlier, just something a little softer.

"Okay, I'll help you."

Suletta almost gasps at the unexpected response. She'd just thought her school dreams were going to be wishful thinking forever, but now this girl is offering to make that wish come true.

"Leave it to me. I'll figure out a way to get you to school. Somehow or another."

She says it with a tone of annoyance, but can't fully hide a hint of excitement too.

"Thank you!" Suletta wraps the gardener up in a hug, too overcome with excitement to stop herself.

The gardener squirms slightly but doesn't push Suletta away.

They make quick plans to meet again soon in the same place so they can put whatever plan the gardener comes up with into action. And then, the girl gathers up her tools and turns to leave.

"Hey, what do I call you?" Suletta calls out, curious to know more about her new partner.

"I was always told not to tell a fairy your name," she replies, pausing briefly before the path out of the woods takes her fully out of sight.

Suletta's heart sinks, but she understands the reluctance. The other fairies have done very mischievous things that they shouldn't have over the years, building up a bad reputation of distrust amongst the humans.

"But you can call me... Miorine," she says, voice echoing over her shoulder because she chooses not to turn around.

And then, she disappears down the path without another word.

"Miorine," Suletta repeats, liking the way each syllable rolls off her tongue. "That's pretty."

She looks down at Miorine's small garden of tomato plants and smiles at how healthy they look. But there's one little weed that Miorine missed, probably because she was distracted by her unexpected visitor.

Suletta plucks it out of the ground, and utters a simple spell to keep the plants growing big and strong. It's the least she can do.
