Kamen Rider Zeztz (episode 20)
After several dreams that have been relatively normal, we finally have one that's in a different kind of setting! The dreamers are kids and so it's a cute little fantasy world. I did not really enjoy the very obvious CGI backgrounds, but Baku got to play "Villager A, jobless, level 7" which was funny enough to make up for it 😂
As with most of these two-part missions, it's harder to comment on just the first part. I feel like the multiple dreamer thing is setting up for some interesting reveal though, so I remain invested.
The b-plot of this episode is Kureha/6 (and another guy... 5 I think?) trying to assassinate Nox for being a traitor. Hard feelings on both sides, I guess! I do hope we get an explanation for what's going on with CODE and what Nox's true intentions are soon though. Otherwise, watching the three of them fight seems a bit pointless from the viewer's perspective because we don't quite understand anyone's motivations.
Anyway, I hope Kureha ends up sticking around and working with Baku eventually. I just really like her. (But I will not get my hopes up too high.)
Miss Scarlet (season 6, episode 4)
I hate to say it but I think the romance this season is getting in the way of interesting storytelling.
Phelps makes a guest return this episode, asking Eliza for help with a case involving a missing woman (who might be dead) and his crime boss uncle. It was nice to see him again (because he has a well-established personality, unlike the new characters this season) but the case investigation was just generally uninteresting to me.
Instead, much of the focus was on a turbulent patch in Eliza and Inspector Blake's relationship. He's still annoyed by her deception in the previous episode. He gets mad when Eliza doesn't bring his daughter back on time from an outing. He apologizes later for being a jerk and they go on a date (this was the sweetest moment, so of course it couldn't last). And then he decides they need some time apart after he blames Eliza for his daughter ditching school for a bit.
It's A Lot. No wonder they don't have time for the mysteries anymore. I just unfortunately don't find this kind of conflict as engaging as previous seasons.
I enjoyed many parts of the episode as I was watching, but the "break up" at the end annoyed me enough to retroactively ruin the rest of the episode for me. *sigh* At least we had Phelps.
Starfleet Academy (episode 5)
This was a great episode for several reasons.
Firstly, of course, was all the Deep Space 9 stuff. I've seen people call it a love letter to the show, and I'd agree with that. It was fantastic to see Jake (Cirroc Lofton) again (still wearing a silly-patterned shirt). And having the teacher be Dax was cool (though it was actually the only thing that really tried my suspension of disbelief. How long do Trill symbiotes live?!)
But aside from all that, this was an episode about Sam and her journey at the Academy, and that's really what made this episode a standout. It wasn't about finding an answer about Sisko's fate. It was really about the search itself and what that means for Sam. She's a really interesting character, and I appreciated that she got the spotlight in this one.
Also, this episode was just funny. I laughed out loud so many times. We had a lot of great moments of the cadets just hanging out and having fun together. The bar scene was my favorite. Plus, the silly b-plot dinner party rehearsal with Ake and Kelrec was fun too.
Five episodes into the series so far, and things are really coming together. I feel like I have a good sense of the world and who the characters are now. I'm excited to see what happens next.
