Snowflake Challenge 2025 #15: unexpected good things

Challenge #15
Talk about an unexpected joyous moment you experienced last year.

I decided to pick more than one unexpected moment of joy from 2024 😊 (these are all fannish joys, btw)

I read a Yu-Gi-Oh fic last year that included a line that made me laugh out loud SO HARD, and I still think of it from time to time.

The fic is Mazaki Anzu has never lost, and the moment comes in chapter five. Anzu is making an analogy about how people who don't want to play sports can still enjoy watching something like baseball.

To which Seto Duel Monsters is my entire world Kaiba replies, seriously, "who on earth watches baseball?"

😂 It's a very fun fic

I did a little bit of silly art last year for Lunar New Year, and shared it here

I only rarely draw, and it's really only screencap redraws at that, but I was quite proud of how this turned out. It was better than expected!

I wanted to do art for this year too, but I haven't had time yet.

My friend [personal profile] bluedreaming rec'd me a Thai GL drama that I might like. And I very much did enjoy it 🥰

The series was called 23.5 and it's a cute little romcom about an awkward nerd who falls in love with her popular classmate.

I'm really new to Thai dramas, and didn't really know what to expect. But this was a pretty nice introduction for me. It's a bit over-the-top at times, but it's incredibly earnest and sweet too. Watching these young ladies figure out their feelings made me think about my own high school days.

In May, I attended my usual anime convention. Despite having some unexpected travel difficulties, I had a wonderful time, as usual.

There are always a lot of little unexpected joys at the convention every year, but the standout this time was finding a Blu-ray copy of Gundam IBO season one in the dealers room. I remember excitedly telling the vendor that it was my favorite anime series, and he was like "well now you have to buy it!" 😂 So, yes, I caved and threw my budget out the window for it. I love having physical media of shows I watch repeatedly.

I'm hoping I can get my hands on season 2 eventually.

I revisited two pieces of media for the first time in over a decade, and both unexpectedly still held up better than I remembered.

First, I did a reread of Howl's Moving Castle by Diana Wynne Jones. I've watched the Ghibli movie several times over the years, but only read the novel once in high school. So I barely remembered it.

But diving into this novel again was an absolute delight! My favorite thing was that Sophie kept calling Howl a "slitherer-outer" because he kept avoiding responsibilities 😂

If you've never read it, I definitely recommend it.

The other thing I revisited was the 2007 Japanese drama: Hana Kimi. I first watched it in college and remembered that it was really funny. I'd even bought a few volumes of the original manga afterwards too. But last year, I couldn't really recall anything other than the basic premise. (Mizuki pretends to be a boy to attend an all-boys boarding school to meet a successful high jumper who's quit the sport.)

The rewatch refreshed my memory, and I had such a good time watching it again. It's so silly, but has some nice heartfelt moments too. Also, I'd forgotten how queer this was for 2007. Some parts are kinda dated, but they didn't bother me too much.

There was an unexpected Hikaru Genji (the idol group) reference in one of the later episodes that had me laughing so hard, I had to pause the video for like a solid 10 minutes. (It's probably not as funny to anyone else 😅)

The series is streaming for free on Viki.

Lastly, I can't not mention Ultraman Arc.

I've been slowly getting into different toku series over the past year, and I just happened to stumble across a tweet about the new Ultraman Arc series premiere back in July. It's free and legally available on YouTube, and they even added an English dub too, so I decided to check it out.

And I've been obsessed ever since. The characters and the world caught my imagination (hah, that's a theme of the series) and has not let go. I've been having so much fun playing around in this universe, and don't plan on stopping anytime soon. It's brought me a lot of joy over the past six months 🥰

(Watch the English dub on YouTube here)

This concludes my snowflake posts for the year ❄️🥰 Thanks for reading!
