Weekly summary: Feb. 18 - Feb. 24, 2024
Today's my birthday! 🥳 As such, I've been kinda busy/out of place all weekend. But it's been a nice time (compared to a generally Not Great week beforehand)
Anyway, I still have a few things to share:
Just two fic recs this week (because they were longer and I'm a slow reader lol).
I really enjoyed this YGO fake dating fic. The ship is Kaiba/Joey, which feels perfect for this trope. It was a fun AU.
And here is another cool AU: a FMAB cyberpunk AU. It follows a lot of plot points from the series but translated to the cyberpunk/tech setting. Very cool idea!

Just a song from Gacharic Spin: odori odore. This was certainly... a song 😂
They've got a new EP out in a few days, so I'll have more Gacharic Spin music next week too.

I put together a little masterpost for my Halfamoon entries here
I've got an idea to eventually make a "masterpost of masterposts" that would include my fics, fics recs, events/challenges/exchanges, headcanons, and more. I just like the idea of having it all organized. So that's a work in progress, and that halfamoon post was the first step

As part of their Oscar campaign, Netflix put their movie "Nimona" up on YouTube for free this past week, so I finally had a chance to watch. It was fantastic! I really enjoyed it from start to finish. Delightfully queer. Very funny (especially the first half). And one of the few animated movies that got me to tear up a bit. 10/10 definitely recommend.
Maybe I'll expand on my movie thoughts later, but right now it's just: 🥰🥰🥰
I also got to watch the new live action Avatar the Last Airbender on Netflix (courtesy of my brother, because we hung out as part of my birthday celebration). It wasn't award-winning television, but I actually really enjoyed it. Like the live action Yu Yu Hakusho, this also felt like canon divergent fanfic. I know a lot of people don't enjoy that, but I don't mind it at all! If you only have 8 episodes to work with, you're going to have to rework and cut some things. And it adds some surprise while watching, which is what I enjoy.
My biggest complaint was just that the first episode was really rough, especially with the acting. But I felt like it got better as it went on. This version definitely has flaws and I'm sure a lot of people won't enjoy it. But I did! (It wasn't as bad as the Live Action Movie We Don't Speak About)
Anyway, my favorite part of the series was Suki! I just love her in any version 🥰

And omg Nimona!! I only watched it a couple of months ago and loved it so much, I found it very moving. (I briefly wrote about it but really it was mostly jumping around in happiness haha.)
It's interesting to read your thoughts about the AtLA live-action series! I loved the still pictures I saw, though the reactions I read weren't very good. I feel like your thoughts help me with calibrating expectations! Are you talking about the AtLA live-action movie in the "we don't talk about it"? I actually really enjoyed it, haha, though I think I wouldn't have as much if I'd seen the animated series first 😂 (Iroh...)

Ooh thanks for the link to your Nimona post! I somehow missed all the hype (other than a few comments that it was good) so I went in with no expectations. Like you, I totally clocked the bad guy immediately 😂 so maybe it WAS intentional. Anyway, I enjoyed the movie so much. Especially the whole "escape from jail" sequence like idk, 15 minutes in or so? It was so much fun and really set the tone for the dynamic of their friendship!! Did you have a favorite part?
I have seen a lot of mixed reviews for Netflix atla so far, but I think a lot of people just expect to see the same exact thing as the original, and so they end up disappointed. But I thought this version was interesting in the things they focused on, so I was entertained. I'd love to hear your thoughts on it if you get to watch! And yes, I was referring to that movie 😂 I still can't get over the odd decision to change the pronunciation of Aang's name in that one 😂 I don't mind changes but that was so superfluous! I was a big fan of the series beforehand, but I can imagine it was just a nice action movie if you'd never seen the series before, yeah? 😁

The escape sequence is lovely! I think my favourite part is the emotional climax though, when Nimona is in monster form and walking toward that sword. The lead-up broke my heart so much, and then the resolution -- I'm tearing up again just thinking about it! It really hit in all of the right places.
The humour in many other spots was also awesome :D Like before the escape sequence, "I'm NOT going to get arrested" then the next cut being thrown in a cell 😂 while the guards talk about lunch haha. And the Nimona friendships flashbacks from way-back were all so sweet despite having basically no dialogue. Very well done.
Yeah, the old AtlA live-action movie was a nice movie when having zero knowledge whatsoever going in, haha XD

Aww yeah 🥺 Nimona losing all hope and going towards the sword- that whole sequence had me tearing up too. Very few movies make me cry but this one's on the list now!
