Miss Scarlet season 5, ep 6: Dangerous Liasons
Firstly, before I dive into the review itself, I have to complain about this episode title! Every other episode this season was "The [something]" and this episode ("Dangerous Liasons") throws that naming convention out the window.
It disrupts the pattern and I hate that! shakes fist at the sky
Anyway, that petty complaint aside, I enjoyed this season finale.
As typical for the series, the danger was a little more prevalent in the season finale. Fitzroy got beat up! Eliza and Clarence got threatened at gunpoint! Mysterious people broke into Eliza's house!
It was enough to keep me invested in the episode's mystery, even if I didn't actually feel like anyone was in real danger. I like action, but not the kind that makes me feel anxious the whole time, so this episode did a great job with that.
That said, it also all felt a bit rushed, since the episode also needed time to include the non-case stuff too (like the wedding reception and afterwards). So I felt like parts of the case felt unresolved. Even though Mrs. Fitzroy hired Eliza to investigate her husband, we never did get any sort of follow up with her afterwards. So it felt like that was left hanging (even though I suppose it technically wasn't.) And even after a second watch of the episode, I'm confused how Eliza and Inspector Blake found the phonograph recording when it was allegedly in the stolen bag the guys were looking for. Or maybe this was another recording? Again, everything happened so fast, I'm still struggling with wrapping my head around all that.
Outside of the case however, everything was entertaining and enjoyable to me. Phelps and his continual work struggles were surprisingly compelling. He's always been a sorta one-note character in previous seasons, so it's just nice to see him get some decent development and focus. (The reveal that the city's most notorious gangster is his uncle, however, was a hilariously convenient ret-con, in my opinion. Maybe it's been mentioned in previous seasons but I sure don't remember it.)
I'm kinda sad that we still didn't get much of Fitzroy in this episode, since he was sidelined by injury. (You shoulda used those boxing skills Moses taught you in season three!) I suppose the writers just didn't have anything interesting to do with his character this season :(
In keeping with the theme this season, we are introduced to yet another interesting lady with a different lifestyle. Mrs. Scott or "The Governess" is a spy for the government! And one in a position of power, at that. A surprising reveal, especially because this show has told us time and time again that society in this time period does not accept women with power. It's why Eliza has had to fight so hard these past five seasons. So it's not lost on me that we finally do see another women in a powerful leadership position and it's someone who operates largely in secret.
The Governess wasn't a very nice lady, but she's very intriguing, especially as a contrast to Eliza. So I hope she'll be back in future episodes at some point.
Lastly, the wedding reception and the final scene. It was lovely to see Ivy and Mr. Potts' romance finally get to this point. And it was fun to just see our main characters relaxing for once, having fun and eating cake. (Drunk Clarence, especially funny.) But it was that moment afterwards, when Eliza realized she was alone again, that really hit. It circled back to the loneliness she struggled with in the first episode of the season. She's lost her oldest friend and companion, and she's still reckoning with that. So, of course, she reaches out to Inspector Blake, to spend some time together outside of work.
I'm still not quite sold on the idea of a romance developing between them, but I am interested in watching their relationship continue to develop in the future.
(I did ruin this lovely moment while watching with mom because I said she only went to his house to avoid washing all the dishes from the reception 😂)
(I'd do the same, not gonna lie.)
Overall, this was a good end to another good season. I started off a little skeptical, and I'm still a bit annoyed about disappearing and reappearing cast members this season, but I really enjoyed watching it as always.
Looking forward to season 6! (It has been officially renewed 🥳)
