Miss Scarlet season 5, ep 5: The Enchanted Mirror
This was a pretty standard run-of-the-mill episode, which meant that I actually really enjoyed it. The Scotland Yard members were all back for this episode, and Eliza got to do what she does best: solve a case!
I've enjoyed most of this season, but it was nice for a bit of a return to familiarity with this one.
The murder case was pretty simple and not too hard to follow. And like many other episodes this season, showcased the lives of more women. I really have enjoyed that theme this season, of seeing how women other than Eliza navigate the world in different ways. (There's been some of that same idea in previous seasons, but I feel like I really noticed it this season.)
I also enjoyed getting to see Eliza and Inspector Blake work together again. He really is growing on me, despite the fact that he's still basically a copy/paste version of William. (That scene of him getting annoyed at the producer felt exactly like how it would have happened if William were there instead. But it was still funny to me to see him so annoyed!) Perhaps, instead, it's the fatherhood aspect of his character that makes him more interesting because obviously we never saw that with William. It's just nice to see he has a life outside of work. And I liked his mysteriously abrupt question to Eliza about how she felt about school, where he gives absolutely no context for it. (The audience knows the question was on behalf of his daughter though!) It was fun to see Eliza as the one baffled for once ðŸ¤
Also, I can't not mention the return of Phelps in this episode. He's hit rock bottom, and it's hard to feel sorry for him because you know he's brought most of it on himself, but I still thought it was compelling to watch him actually show emotion in this episode other than his usually grumpiness.
We'll probably never get this much depth to his character again, but it was nice while it lasted!
(Him shutting the door on Eliza and her silently opening it back up was also really funny. This was quite a funny episode.)
There still wasn't a lot of Fitzroy, but the next episode preview looks like he should be around more finally. Though with his father involved too, I'm not sure it's going to go well for anyone...
I'm honestly a bit sad that he's barely been around this season, especially because he had such an interesting storyline last season. But maybe like Patrick Nash, that was a good emotionally resonating ending for his character and there's nothing else the writers want to do with him. (Or maybe the actor's been busy. Honestly idk.)
Anyway, only one more episode for this season! I do hope they get renewed for another season because I feel like this season would be an unsatisfying note to end on (especially because season four felt like a good end point). Plus I'm kinda interested to see how Eliza and Inspector Blake's relationship continues to develop (professionally or otherwise).
We shall see.
