Miss Scarlet season 5, ep 2: The Guild

I'm beginning to think I enjoy this series not only for Eliza's cool hats but for its exasperated men.

"Is that a sigh of irritation or acceptance?"

"Both."

This exchange was my favorite bit from this week's episode of Miss Scarlet, "The Guild." It pretty much sums up the current relationship between Eliza and Inspector Blake.

If you give Eliza enough time, she will wear down anyone with her persistence.

I complained last week that Blake was basically a carbon copy of William, but after another episode, I've decided that I don't mind it so much. It was the mildly exasperated man/extremely tenacious woman dynamic that I really enjoyed before about this series, and I'm continuing to enjoy it now even with a different exasperated character.

The case in this episode -- the sudden death of the chair of the Guild of Private Detectives -- gave Eliza and Inspector Blake plenty of opportunity to run into each other. (Eliza just can't resist an interesting case when it's right in front of her.) He's still pretty firm in his plan to not hire private detectives, but I like that the Guild's actions and Malone's involvement gave Blake a believable and realistic excuse to work with Eliza. I'm interested to see how she continues to wear him down the rest of the season 😂

Speaking of Malone, it was surprising to see him again. When Mom and I were watching, we struggled to remember the details of the season 3 episode where he first appeared. It has been too long since I watched that one. But the episode did a pretty good job of referencing what happened, that I wasn't too confused. I'm curious to see if he'll pop up more this season or if this was a one-off appearance. He'd be a good contrast with Eliza since he's the perfect example of what Blake doesn't like about private investigators.

But aside from the case, the really interesting part of this episode was Ivy's story. She's deeply unsatisfied with her life at the moment, bored with the same housework all day and feeling stagnant compared to Eliza and Barnabas. That brief scene where she's embarrassed, upset, and catches a glimpse of herself in the mirrors on the street had the most emotional resonance of the whole episode. And this plot is a nice way to build on how much she enjoyed helping out Eliza in the previous season.

I wasn't surprised at all when she ended up with a job in Scotland Yard's new clerical office at the end of the episode, but I felt like the moment was earned.

One thing I really like about this series is that it shows us so many different kinds of women all the time, with so many different ambitions. Ivy's moment to shine was well overdue.

My final observations on this episode are as follows: guest character Archibald Spilsbury looks like the kind of guy you'd shove in a locker if they had those in 19th century London, Clarence continues to be my new favorite because he's just so earnest, poor Fitzroy hasn't done anything at all so far this season, and I miss Patrick! (Please get him out of prison soon!)
