Weekly summary: Mar. 5 - Mar. 11, 2023
It was conference tournament week for those who follow men's college basketball, so that took up most of my attention in my free time this past week. More on that, and a few other things below. Let's get to it!
As I've mentioned before, my family and I are big NC State fans. I definitely wanted to keep up with the team during the ACC tournament. So, because I don't get any of the TV stations with the games anymore, I spent a few evenings camped out in my brother's living room to watch instead. (I was also having a not-great-mental-health week, so it was good to get out of the house too!)
Anyway, Wednesday's games were really fun to watch! NC State played a fun, up-tempo game. The kind of game that I enjoy watching. But then on Thursday, they definitely seemed more out-of-sorts than usual, and got knocked out of the tournament. Still, the team this year has a lot of enthusiasm and energy, and I'm excited to see them play again in the NCAA tournament this month!
The other thing I was really focused on this week was watching more of The Witch from Mercury. I'm up through episode 9 now. Last week, I said the storyline was a bit slow in grabbing my attention, but it definitely picks up around episode 6 when all the corporate scheming really starts making an impact. So I've been a lot more invested in watching this week!
Also, episode 7 was titled "Shall We Gundam?" which I thought was a hilarious reference to "Shall We Dance?" ๐ (by the way, if you've never seen the Japanese "Shall We Dance?" movie, I recommend it! I liked it a lot better than the American remake. None of that has anything to do with G-witch tho...)
I'm hoping the last few episodes of this season turn out to be just as entertaining!

Hey!Say!JUMP is continuing their random old PV uploads, and this week it was ใๆๆฅใธใฎYELLใ(which pretty much translates to "yell to tomorrow") from 2014. This is personally one of my favorite hsj songs because 1) it's really catchy and easy to sing, and 2) it puts me in a good mood whenever I hear it. It's also worth noting that this was the theme song to one of my favorite j-dramas: Suikyuu Yankees (which starred hsj members Yuto and Takaki... so maybe I'm a bit biased ๐)
Anyway, I love this song very music, but the music video is extremely basic. Very typical Johnnys. But also, this was tacked on as a double a-side release with Weekender, and I've always suspected they were low on the budget by the time they got to filming this one... alas, I'll never know for sure. But on the bright side, Yuto's temporary blond hair is encapsulated here forever!
In new music releases, here's a new song from Unlucky Morpheus (ใขใใชใชใน which I'm almost positive translates to Amaryllis). I usually like songs from this group, but I was feeling a bit lukewarm on this one. I miss the vibe of their older songs. But it is what it is, and I think Jill on violin is fantastic. She's my favorite!
My favorite song of the week, however, is the title track to Nemophilia's upcoming album: "Rise." The lyrics are quite uplifting, which is what I needed this week. (Most of the lyrics are in English, btw.) Additionally, I'm just a big fan of mayu's rough vocals on the verses and then her smoother vocals on the chorus. Fun contrast! I've listened to this an absurd number of times this week. Plus, I also really like their styling in the music video ๐
Moving right along, I'm still on a writing break, so I've been trying to catch up on my reading list. I'll probably have more fic recs next week, but this time I have a good multichaptered bkdk fic to recommend. It just wrapped up this week. If you enjoy parallel universe hopping, you'll definitely enjoy "I Will Find You." Check it out if you have the time!
Lastly, ANN published this excellent guide for people interested in diving into the Kamen Rider franchise. It's a good overview of the series and movies available for viewing currently. And it's perfect timing because I'm ready to fall back down into the tokusatsu rabbit hole ๐
