Fic: Petals drifting on the breeze (Fruits Basket)

Another hanami fic! This one's short but sweet 😊

Title: Petals drifting on the breeze
Fandom: Fruits Basket
Pairing: Kyou/Tohru
Wordcount: less than 500 words
Notes: post-canon; fluff; introspection
Ao3 link: here

It's been two weeks since their graduation, and one week since arriving at their new home. Kyou feels like he's scarcely had the time to adjust to how much everything has changed.

He watches a gust of wind knock a few sakura blossoms off of a nearby tree.

That's what he feels like. Just a guy getting knocked around by the winds of life, having no clue where exactly he'll end up next.

"Kyou, there's more onigiri if you're still hungry," Tohru says, offering up the container with a smile.

He takes one and smiles too, thinking about the fun they had in the kitchen this morning making the onigiri together. Their new place is still filled with half-unpacked boxes scattered around, but the kitchen at least has been used enough to feel like it's been settled in.

"Having fun?" he asks between bites.

"Absolutely," Tohru nods, and then glances up at the pink and white petals overhead, sheltering them from the sun. "This place is lovely."

They had been lucky, Kyou thinks, that they had arrived in this new town just in time to see the cherry blossoms before they disappeared for the season. And they'd been lucky to discover this quiet park not too far from their home. He can only imagine what else they'll find as they get to know this place better.

Living in the world. That's what his goal was after the curse was broken.

Living in the world and experiencing so many different things with Tohru by his side.

Kyou scoots closer so that he can wrap an arm around Tohru as he leans against the tree trunk behind him. She tears her eyes away from the flowers as she shifts position too, settling into his arms with a pleased sigh.

Two weeks ago, as they were getting their high school diplomas and packing up Shigure's house, these flowers probably didn't look anything like they do now. Kyou imagines tiny little buds just barely opening up. In a few days, the petals will have all fallen away, leaving only new green leaves behind on the trees, growing and settling in for the upcoming year.

New beginnings. Just like him and Tohru.

"This is our first hanami together since we started dating," Tohru says, as if she’d read his mind. She laces their fingers together as she relaxes.

"But not our last," Kyou promises.

A few more blossoms break free from their tree thanks to a nudge from another gust of wind, and Kyou watches them float away until they're out of sight.
