Weekly summary: Oct. 22 - Oct. 28, 2023

Four weeks post-surgery now, and I can say I'm feeling so much better than before. I'm actually feeling like I have energy to do things again because I'm not in pain every day. So this past week was pretty nice in terms of getting back to normal for me. (Still waiting for the incisions to finish healing, but we’re getting there. Mostly.)

Anyway, I have a lot to include in today's weekly summary:

I'll start off with a few fic recs that I had a chance to read earlier in the week. I'm still, of course, deep in the FMA Brotherhood tag, and somehow all three fics this time are Royai.

I enjoyed this lovely post-canon Riza-centric fic focused on gardening. (Gardening, whether it's fictional or irl, always brings me a lot of joy.)

I got really sucked into reading this post-canon fic where Riza and Roy are sent to serve time in prison. This one was also Riza-centric.

Lastly, here's a modern AU with detective Roy and barista Riza. It was a good mix of sweet and exciting. (Includes some light kidnapping)

Once I got started on writing stuff for Seasons Of Drabbles, however, I didn't get much reading done after that. But I'm really excited about how each fic has turned out so far. My goal is to write nine treat fics, but I might burn out before I get there lol

I'm also going to post my first G-witch fic today, but I'll make a separate post for it and include it in next week's summary.

Music updates!

Trident is back with a fun up-tempo song called Kickass. English subtitles are available! Also, I want warn about some flashing lights during the first verse. (They go away after that thankfully)

In HSJ news, they released a new digital EP this week (and named it P.U for some unknown reason πŸ˜‚). So this means a new music video, but I'm gonna be honest... I hated the song so much, I will not even link it here! Not even their shiny pants will be enough incentive for me to post it.

On the bright side, however, hsj also shared the first take party version of Dear My Lover, which was basically them all just being silly while filming. Highlights include Takaki as a disco ball, Yuto throwing pillows everywhere, and Daiki raving by himself for like a whole verse πŸ˜‚

Shifting gears a bit, here's a rare non-Japanese rec: The Dead South released a new song called Tiny Wooden Box this week. I don't know how to describe them other than maybe alternative bluegrass? Idk. I initially found them a few years ago searching YouTube for bluegrass bands, so I think that counts.

Last minute addition to this week: Wagakki Band released a concert version of The Beast and it's fun as usual. I'm always impressed with every concert clip I see from them. Such high energy!

In some tragic music news, Sakurai Atsushi, the lead singer of Buck-tick, passed away last week. I posted some thoughts about the band's music and my memories of listening to him here.

While making that post, I discovered that there's no way to get YouTube embed links while using my phone. Which is inconvenient because I do all my posting from my phone 😠 but maybe I'll drag my laptop out at some point and update the post with embedded videos instead of just the hyperlinks.

My other post this week was about Star Trek. I answered a 30 day Star Trek question challenge, and it turned out to be pretty long but super fun. You can read it here.

I have been thinking a lot about friendship recently, as being sick and having surgery really put some things into perspective for me. And then, I happened to stumble across this NPR article with tips about making new friends as adults.

Some of the advice isn't very helpful for me (I'm not moving, and I live in the same rural area I've been in basically my whole life), but it did get me thinking about different things I could maybe try. Like invite some local acquaintances over for movie night? Or maybe start a local writing group? (I miss the old one I was a part of before.) I should probably make an effort to get out to community events more often (though that really depends on how exhausted I am from work each week).

Anyway, I have some ideas now, and I feel good about that.

That wraps things up for this weekly summary post! Wishing everyone a fantastic week ahead! (And an especially fun Halloween for those who celebrate)
